Knowledge Resources › AI Governance
Last updated: 20 August 2026
As organisations adopt artificial intelligence, sound governance helps manage legal and reputational risk. The following are general considerations. This is not legal advice, and the legal landscape for AI is still developing.
Practical considerations
- Know your AI systems — keep an inventory of the AI tools your organisation uses, and of the personal data they process.
- Data governance — ensure the personal data used to build or operate AI systems is handled lawfully, with a proper basis, clear purposes, and appropriate security.
- Transparency — be clear with people when they are interacting with an AI system, or when AI materially affects a decision about them.
- Human oversight — keep meaningful human involvement in significant decisions rather than relying on fully automated outcomes.
- Documentation and accountability — record how AI systems are developed, tested, and monitored, and who is responsible for them.
- Risk assessment — assess and manage the risks to individuals before deploying an AI system, and review them over time.
- Watch the law — AI regulation in India and abroad is evolving; revisit your approach as the rules develop.
Good AI governance is not only about compliance with any single law — it is a way of managing risk while the legal framework continues to take shape.
