Knowledge Resources › If You Are a Victim of Cyber Fraud
Last updated: 6 August 2026
Online financial fraud, identity theft, and social media–based offences are increasingly common. Acting quickly can make a meaningful difference to the outcome.
General steps to consider
- Report immediately — the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) and the helpline number 1930 are the primary channels for reporting financial cyber fraud
- Preserve evidence — retain screenshots, transaction records, messages, and emails; do not delete anything
- Inform your bank — for financial fraud, notifying the bank promptly may help limit loss
- File a complaint — a formal complaint can be lodged with the local cyber crime cell
Digital evidence must be handled carefully to remain admissible. Preserving records in their original form, and documenting how they were obtained, matters if the case proceeds to litigation.
